I'm the researcher working in Korean Electrical Safety Corporation.
I would like to receive data or documents that number of the accidents caused by electrical fire decreased due to facilitating AFCI.
I know that you are busy but if you give a help and it would become information which is important to us.
I wish the good fortune goes always with you. Thanks for your interest.

You're assuming that someone's keeping data on that, which doesn't seem to be the case.

Adopted in 2002, enforced here in Fla. in 2004. I don't think thats enough time to compile stats. I'f you haven't done a forum search on AFCI, you should. You will get an industry perspective on the subject. Are you located in Korea, or working from the US? Have you used AFCI in Korea, or thinking about it?

I'm working from Korea and I don't have experience using AFCI.

But I am engaged in the part that is related to AFCI.

Thanks.

I need to revise that before you jump all over me. Adopted in 1999 enforced here 2 years later. Still hard to get stats on fires that didn't happen.

You should enthusiastically endorse them. They are good for your economy.

There is no such data and it is very unlikily that there ever will be as there is no real data on the actual nature of the origin of dwelling unit fires.

The problem with that kind of data is the same as with GFI's. We do not know how many lives were saved because there was a GFI installed, (nobody calls up and says "I dropped my hairdryer in the tub and the outlet tripped"), but we can probably tell you how many people die because there wasn't one installed.

Also AFCI's may not stop all that many fires. There must be a arc for them to function. Once the arch has occured it may or may not ignite any flammable material around it.

I also believe that the fire report only comes out every so many years and my guess is it will be many years before we can tell if they are working or not, since one of the ways they keep track is by the age of the house, so there could be twice as many fires in house built prior to 2002 when the law took effect and the numbers would become a little misleading as the number of fires in newer houses tends to be lower anyways.
