Is it legal to use a steel handy box blank cover on a plastic nail on box? Obviously the cover would not be bonded however I thought I read somewhere that this is OK. Comments????

Re: Steel Handy Box Blank Cover

404.9 says that faceplates for switches are bonded by bonding the switch. 517.13(B) exception 1 speaks of this as well.

I think it is fine. :)

2005 NEC
314.25 Covers and Canopies

(A) Nonmetallic or Metal Covers and Plates Nonmetallic or metal covers and plates shall be permitted. Where metal covers or plates are used, they shall comply with the grounding requirements of 250.110.

Re: Steel Handy Box Blank Cover

Ryan, did you notice he said a Blank cover? Not a switch cover.

Why not just use a nonmetallic cover?

Re: Steel Handy Box Blank Cover

Al, then my iterpretation 250.110 would be that the metal cover on non metallic box would have to be grounded or provision for. I understand that with a recep. or switch is ok but with a blank? I would say "nope" Paul I agree use NM cover its also a little cheaper.

Re: Steel Handy Box Blank Cover

The steel covers fit the box a lot nicer than non metallic covers do. The non metallic covers are actually larger than the box and leave sharp corners protruding creating a possible snagging/breaking problem especially in attics.

Re: Steel Handy Box Blank Cover

triphase,

250.110(1) is an interesting allowance for not grounding. Since we don't know anything about the location of the "plastic nail on box", we can't just say no to the ungrounded metal cover.

So, by 250.110, the blank steel handibox cover may or may not be grounded, depending upon situation.

And, 314.25 says the cover can be metal or plastic.

m73214,

You could always drill and tap a 10/32 screw into the cover or squeeze on a ground clip if you are within 5' horizontally or 8' vertically of ground or grounded objects.

Personally, if I did the work, I would ground the metal cover (assuming I have to install metal), in any event. But that's just my preference.

Re: Steel Handy Box Blank Cover

Al, You are correct. I should have asked about location of box before assuming and m73214 I agree, they do trim out neater.

Re: Steel Handy Box Blank Cover

M, I'd like to make a suggestion: use plastic nail-on 4" sq. boxes instead of nail-ons. I understand they cost more, but the right parts for the job often do.

(By "right parts", I'm referring to practicality, not code.)
