Could anyone give me a little (lesson) info on Church steeple/roof grounding.
On all the jobs I've ever been on I cant remember the layout for the lighting rods, including the one on the steeple, or the size of the wire or how it was fastened.
I wired a church back in the late 70's and I left the job before the lightning work was done.
I do remember that the work was to be subed ot "due to liability"....to some company out West.Is liability for this type work such an issue that a company specializing in this work must be brought on site.
The reason this all comes to mind is that recently I was installing battery emergency lights in my church. One of the board members asked if I could tell them how to refasten the ground wire(proper fastener to use) on the steeple. The wire is still connected to ground, but was left unsupported after painting, and I guess the issue was what are the proper fasteners and how to go about it.
Thanks

Lightning protection is a system. Every component is deisgned based on a serious of evaluations and calculations. The key document to review is the NFPA 780 - Standard for the Installation of Lightning Protection Systems.

Churches require special consideration due to their height, roof style, and construction type.

Many pure electrical contractors are not qualified or properly trained to install lightning protection systems. It is possitively a specialty trade...

You answered my question.
This is a subject I'd like to know more about.
For some reason I didn't think they just drove a ground rod and ran a conductor, theres a bit of science involved.
