Dear Mikeholt Members,

What is Meant by Step and Touch voltage measurements for the Earth Switches?

33 KV Siemens GIS, the earth switches needs to be tested by this method, which I have not heard about this earlier.

Please assist.

Arjun.

See:
IEEE 80/2000 ch. 10.8 Touch voltage criteria for GIS.
This test it is GIS manufacturer job [including calculation].

As current flows through a wire, the voltage drops along the wire. Between any two points on the wire, there will be a difference in potential, a voltage. Similarly, if there is current flowing through the ground (i.e., dirt, planet Earth), there will be voltage dropped along the path of current flow. Between any two points along that path, there will be a difference in potential, a voltage. Suppose the two points we are talking about happen to be the location of your left foot and the location of your right foot. There will be a voltage between those two points, and it can cause current to flow through your body. That is the essential meaning of "step potential."
