Straight wire pull when no conduit size is given

I was caught off guard by a question regarding the box length needed for a straight pull because they didn't list the diameter of the conduit. It just gave the size of the wire (let's say 3 AWG). How would I approach something like this? Do I need to figure out the smallest possible conduit that this would fit into? Mike's guide as well as the code book and another book I have all have the same calculations when conduit is given, but I haven't seen one without it.

Well, I suppose it depends on where the question comes from. If single phase, 3 #3 AWG with a #8 would fit in a 1" EMT, though not in FMC. I expect most of us would use a 1.25" EMT or similar.

Per 314.28 (A)(1), 1.25 x 8 would require a box at least 10" in that dimension if that trade size raceway was used. Eight inches for a 1" EMT...

I think I found my own answer... Perhaps the question I saw was referring to a cabinet and not a regular box and Table 312.6(B) Minimum Wire-Bending Space at Terminals has the answers.
