Re: Stranded Wire and Wire Nuts

If anybody (accidently) overfills a box I'll bet it's not as bad with these.

Don't get excited, I just mean because the wires will spin, UH OH, in the holes the wires will tuck in easier.

a slight tug on the stranded wire to see if it holds
Are you afraid to give it a good tug? :)

Re: Stranded Wire and Wire Nuts

I believe the Ideal orange connectors state on the box " pre twisting" not necessary. Don't know if any other connectors state that. They are the best at that size.

Hi click on this link and follow the second post. You will get all the information you ever wanted to know about whether to twist or not twist connections before putting wire connectors on.

Welcome to the forum. :D

Re: Stranded Wire and Wire Nuts

when i was active, i assumed that a good wire nut connection could hold any fixture by itself (not chandeliers), and i pulled fairly hard on the wire nuts.

i experimented with hooking the tip of the wire to capture the stranded, but that is harder to do with 12. worked good when i was using some problem brands of wire nuts.

what bothers me about back stab devices is that they rely on a small contact area and spring action. with any load there is some heating and with a continuous cycle of heating and cooling, eventually the temper is lost. i guess it would not be too bad for a single bulb that didn't capture heat, but my experience with backstab devices is that i wished i had never used them. future work i guess.

Re: Stranded Wire and Wire Nuts

Now I'm thinking at the connection point there isn't enough connection area to equal the 12 or 14 gauge area. Are we supposed to maintain any parameters at the connection.

I'm still tired so I'm not looking anything up yet.

Re: Stranded Wire and Wire Nuts

So, the folks who use these things actually hang lights with them? My boss gave me a handful to try out, and after a couple of boxes I tossed them because half of what I touch (lights) require attaching to stranded wire. One more thing to carry around with marginal use...

And they give me the willys.
