A contractor wants to use scrap peices of NM sheathing to secure NM cables in wall by wrapping around and nailing into the framing. this is not a listed method and there is no way to space conductors apart to avoid bundling. Are there any areas excepting this method??? Would appreciate any response especially from any AHJ's

You mean like this?

I'm sure someone (you know who you are :) )will be along to discuss this ...

334.30 Securing and Supporting. Nonmetallic-sheathed cable shall be supported and secured by staples, cable ties, straps, hangers, or similar fittings designed and installed so as not to damage the cable, at intervals not exceeding 1.4 m (4 1 /2 ft) and within 300 mm (12 in.) of every outlet box, junction box, cabinet, or fitting. Flat cables shall not be stapled on edge.
Sections of cable protected from physical damage by race-way
shall not be required to be secured within the raceway.
NM is not a similar fitting to staples, cable ties, straps, or hangers. It's up to the AHJ to approve the method. It shouldn't be allowed, IMO.

When used as a substitute for framing members, and secured within 12" of the future box, I've done similar things. It comes in handy to stub out vanities in bathrooms.

But I don't use NM for cable ties.

Sometime back in the seventies we were doing a job with numerous electricians on site. I go through a different part of the building and find a guy using rebar tie wire strapping EMT to the bar joist, AHJ accepted it.

The only accepted practice of using scrap pieces of NM to secure anything electrical is: The piece I have holding my ladders to the ladder rack.

That's it.

Paul M, tie wire was still acceptable for strapping EMT to the top of a bar joist well into the 90's in some areas. Some contractors were just to cheap to buy straps. In my opinion it works well enough it just doesn't look very professional. I think I like the two big connectors even better than the NM tie method but couldn't they use just one really big connector.
