I am a non-electrician homeowner who wants to make sure I give my electrician correct instructions and would like advice prior to contacting them. I am having a sub-panel installed for use with a solar inverter/battery combo. The inverter can handle many of the household loads, however there are some I would need to sequester in a separate panel so they are not powered during an outage (car charger, clothes dryer…). I currently have a Siemens 200 amp main panel (Siemens SN Series 200 Amp 40-Space 60-Circuit Indoor Main Breaker Plug-On Neutral Load Center Model #SN4060B1200). I would like to add a smaller sub-panel right next to the main panel (in the next stud bay). The sub-panel would have the same amp rating as the main panel but less capacity (Siemens SN Series 200 Amp 20-Space 40-Circuit Indoor Main Lug Plug-On Neutral Load Center). In the event of a power outage the sub-panel would be powered by the inverter/battery. Since most of the household circuits would be put on the sub-panel would it be possible to remove the 200 amp main breaker and electrical service connection from the main panel and connect them to the sub-panel (making it the main panel) and thus have a slightly smaller main and larger sub-panel (former main) and have to transfer fewer circuits to the new sub-panel?
