Sub panel size

Does a subpanel have to be smaller than the main? I have a 100 amp panel and I want too add a sub panel. Do I have to go with a smaller breaker in the sub panel? If so, how much smaller and which code is it?

Eddie you have to calculate the load. If the main panel is 100 amps then the load on the 2 panels cannot exceed 100 amps. You can use a 200 amp panel but if the load is more than 100 amps you will trip the main.

Now, are you just a pipelayer or are you an electrician?
