Good Morning everyone, My question today is,can I intall Aluminum ser cable, sized properly for a sub panel in a detached garage? I was told by the local inspector that ser cable can not be installed in a pvc conduit, sleeved underground from the basement to the garage 20 ft away. I was told it was not suitable for the condition, even tho the cable rated XHHW. a second opion would be appreciated thank you verbaled

I believe UL indicates that service entrance cable is for aboveground use only. Also see section 300.5(D)(5). Type USE would probably be a better choice.

Re: Sub Panel to a detached Garage

I have seen SE aluminum used to underground feed a remote garage that shortly developed an open due to moisture damage and aluminum corrosion. Even if it is put into pvc, I think you'd be asking for trouble and eventually digging it back up.
