Question about code relating to subpanel.

When installing a SubPanel on a third floor while the main panel is in the basement. Is it necessary to include a main breaker on the subpanel itself. I would of course install a breaker on the main electric panel in basement.

Re: sub panel - with or without main breaker

Maybe.

If this is an apartment where the occupant does NOT have access to the main (in basement), a MCB panel would be needed...if the occupant does have access to the main in the basement, MLO panel.

Now you tell us: MCB or MLO? ;)

Indeed there is access. It is not a multifamily situation. I knew you had to provide a shut-off means for multifamily unit. I was not sure about distance issues for a subpanel from main panel. It only has 4-6 breakers.

Thanks for your input
