Existing Home Main Breaker House Panel.
2 small Subs set in basement areas. Just catching random things.
3 wire feeding. Home Inspector says NO GO.
Is he stating that because the 3rd wire...Neutral inside insulation like the 2 hots... or just wanting to justify his charges..
Sorry if dumb question..... Rough week..lol

You can't run 3 wire anymore. You would need to run L1-L2-N-G. Been that way since about the 1990 edition. If it was legal when installed it does not have to be ripped out in most cases.

I don't think it was ever legal to run 3-wire in the same building. It was allowed (with exceptions) for a separate building but not in the same building.

I agree.

If the feeders are run in a metal raceway or armored cable it might be compliant.

what type of 3wire? romex, other ??

Not a direct quote but basically....

no continuous metallic paths between buildings and bonded to the system ground
no ground fault protection of equipment on supply side

There's another thread farther down that has basically the same question, whether a 3 wire circuit (L1/L2/G) could be run from a pole disco to an outbuilding (modular/manufactured home)

Even before EGCs? There would be no reason to run a 4 wire feeder when the branch circuits had only 2 wires.
I don't really know - just asking to satisfy my curiosity.

That's like asking if there was a speed limit for automobiles before they were invented!:p
