Hi, need a second opinion. I am upgrading my 200A service. Installing a new 200A panel. I presently feed a 100A sub-panel from the 200 amp panel. I am installing a new meter main and plan to feed the sub-panel from a 100A breaker in the meter main. My question: will both the main panel and sub-panel now become some panels thereby both becoming subject to sub-panel rules? Thanks
 
Everything after the meter main will be sub panels and must be treated as such.

I agree that both panels will be sub panels in terms of rules there are no real rules for sub panels other than you would feed them with a four wire cable instead of a three wire cable assuming single phase

Agreed. By rules, I was referring to the separation of grounds and neutrals.
 
Before the meter main you would have service conductors, after the main you would have feeder conductors, The meter main will contain the service disconnect and the MBJ after that point you need an EGC run with the feeders.

..and keep your neutrals and equipmetn grounds separated... isolated neutral bar; equipment ground bar bond to panel.
 
The meter main stays as a meter main/main service. Any other panel enclosure past that point is sub panel.

Do you have any picture or can youi do a drawing and post it?
 
Hope you’re not upgrading the whole service to 3 or 4 hundred amps! Those meter bases are as scarce as hen’s teeth right now. And those that have them want a $3000 premium on them.

You're correct. I didn't mention it because it was inferred. I would hope that someone would not run a 4-wire feeder and then put both the EGC and neutral on the same bus in the sub-panel. :)

I once saw a panel with 4-wire cable from a meter main, which had feeder ground wire bonded to panel with a single lug. Then all the Romex grounds were landed on the neutral bar 🤦‍♂️
