I have a crawl space in an existing home which is about 4' 6" high. Can I put a sub panel in this location? Code reference pls.THX!

Yes you can. 110.26(E) Exception. But I don't think you should. That is a design choice that I would not choose to make, if it were avoidable in any way.

Thanks for the reply and code reference. Im looking over my options on the job ,seems odd to me to put it there but I might have no choice. Then again Im not crazy about sub panels in the attic either...Homeowner has a plan  to wire the entire new kitchen from an old 6/3. Electric stove included !

Why is the HO designing the electrical system? That would not fly with me. I am the pro not them.

I do not understand why the NEC would allow a panelboard to go in a crawl space for an existing dwelling. Every home is existing after the CO has been made so any house except a new one is allowed to have a panel in a crawl space? That is absurd.

I bet the reason for this article is for existing homes with lower basement ceiling where you need an upgrade. I cannot imagine an inspector allowing that install. I know what the code says and I agree with Charlie on both aspects-- it is legal but not a good idea.

Thats the homeowners input, it makes me laugh. Im not going to do it, its not a good design. To me its silly to put it in a crawl, just curious what the NEC said about it.
