Sub Panel

I am installing a 100 amp subpanel in a detached garage. Building codes in this area are based on the 95 NEC. Could someone please tell me what the 95 NEC burial depth requirement is for the feed to the subpanel. I have been told two different things by building inspecters and need to know what the 95NEC requires. I don't have easy access to the 95 NEC.

Sorry guys but I meant to say "Building codes in this area are based on the (05) NEC". I'm stuck in the past I guess.

Welcome to the forum.:)

The burial depth requirement will be based on what type of wiring method you are going to be using.

What type of wiring method are you going to use?

Also is this going to be installed under a driveway or parking area?

The requirements will be located in Table 300.5 of the 2005 NEC.

Sorry guys but I meant to say "Building codes in this area are based on the (05) NEC". I'm stuck in the past I guess. It will be insalled in conduit and it will not be under a driveway or parking lot.

For PVC conduit the burial depth would be 18" in accordance with Table 300.5 unless you hade 2" of concrete covering the trench then it would be 12".

Chris

NEC 2005 Table 305 is where your answer lies.

Direct Burial cables - 24"

RMC or IMC - 6"

PVC - 18"
