This isn't a code question per se, as the NEC is pretty clear in this article. What I was wondering is if anybody could point me to a resource that would give explanation of the design and function of the cord end protection devices that are being factory installed on new hiar dryers. I've heard many say they are GFI's but I'd like something more specific. I am currently doing contract service for a chain of hair salons and have had three calls in the past two weeks regarding nuisance tripping on these devices. What my research shows is that the motor on certain electric hair clippers creates just enough "noise" on the neutral to trip the cord end units. However, the same motor does not trip a standard GFI recept. Thus far, the only viable solution I've thought of is to run additional circuits, with dedicated neutrals, so that the dryers can be plugged into a different circuit than the clippers. Kind of a costly fix for what is, ultimately, an issue of appliance incompatability. I'd like to research this further, partly out of my own curiosity and partly to see if a quicker, more cost effective fix is possible. Any help would be appreciated.
