We recently designed a submersible pump installation, 700 HP pumps at 250+/- feet of water depth. We specified that the 500 MCM power conductor cables (approx. 1200') be continuous from MCC to motor. My question is, since no known similar application was available, if damage to the hypalon insulation were to occur, what is the best method of splicing?

What voltage?
If 460, I have made many submersible pump splices, up to 300 ft deep, have done with compression connectors, and either heat shrink - heavy wall w/ sealer, or 33+ and skotch kote. If the splice will not be submerged then use one hole lugs and insulate. I would put a splice at the well head.

How are you going to be able to install the wire in a continuous length from the MCC to the motor? In the deep wells that I have worked on there was always a splice box at the well head. There is a very sever risk of damage to the conductors when they are installed if you make the installation in that manner and a large increase in the labor required to install the wire. Why do you have an objection to a splice at the well head?
