I have been asked to install a subpanel for a taior shop. They would like to have it in the attic. There will be an access point to the attic.
Is this location allowed?

Re: subpanel location

Article 408 requires you to comply with article 404.8. That would require the panel to be readily accessible. There would have to be a permanent stairway to it.

Review the definition of readily accessible in Art 100, and working clearance rules in 110.26

As to wether "fold down stairs" would satisfy the "readily accessible" requirement,I would suggest that your inspector would be the one to decide.
While fold down stairs may not fit everyones definition of permanent stairs ,they are certainly not a portable ladder by def. either.
Give an inspectpor the call prior to starting that portion of the job. If that is the only obstacle to proceeding I would think it would be acceptable.
I would accept it.

First not to even discuss the readily accessible problem. What about the ambiant temp in a attic. this would be a big problem with thermo-magnetic breakers and would cause alot of false tripping??

I think you need to talk them into a wall close by.
