Subpanel size

I'm adding a circuit in a residential system for a 40A pool heater. Tje existing panel is full, so I need to add a subpanel. I can steal the breaker space that currently houses the 30A pool pump and move that circuit to the new subpanel. What size breaker should feed the subpanel?

It may be easier / less expensive to just add a 30 or 40 amp sub panel and move several of the single pole loads to it.

If not I would go with 80 amps.

What size is the subpanel and what size wire are you going to feed it with? How much capacity is left in the main panel?
 
From an owners cost, ease of installation the first thing to do (aside from the load calculation) is to check tandem breaker possibility. Usually easy to move a couple low-amp line-to-neutral loads to a couple tandems and make room for a 2-pole. Of course, while you are at it, you should check what rating of breaker the panel will accept if you have to go the subpanel route.
