Is it permissible to substitute a GFI receptacle for a ungrounded receptacle in a residence? Several outlets in the house are ungrounded, I thought it was ok to

substitute a GFI for the ungrounded outlets.

Yes, but not always.

(2017) 250.114(3) lists cord and plug connected items in dwellings that are supposed be connected to an EGC regardless.

yet it must be pointed out the afci function is something manufacturers claims are a tad shady on beyond the 'device'
