I'm seeking clarrification on the language used in Article 501.5:
501.5 General
....Equipment listed and marked in accordance with 505.9(C)(2) for use in Class I, Zone 0, 1 or 2 locations shall be permitted in Class I, Division 2 locations for the same gas and with a suitable temperature class...
(emphasis mine)
Here's the situation: I am trying to determine if the existing light fixtures we have in a refinery application are suitable for the hazardous area temperature class. The lights in question are "restricted breathing" type fixtures listed for Class I, Zone 2 with a T3 rating. However, they are listed for Class I, Division 2 with a higher temperature rating (T4). The restricted breathing options for the fixture are only listed under "Zone 2" on the cut sheet.
The area in question is a Class 1, Division 2 area that requires a T3 rating for equipment.
At first glace it seems that this section of 501.5 will allow this fixture to be used in a Division 2 area with it's T3 rating. But the phrase "suitable temperature class" has me thinking that it might not. If it said something like: "same temperature class" I wouldn't have a problem.
Does this wording imply that a Zone 2 temperature rating does not apply to its use in a Division 2 area?
Thanks!
