Should be interesting
1/2 wind
1/2 solar/pv

looks heavy on converters and machines

texts are expensive
the solar one is a free download
might buy it for my library anyways

First class
Park's/dq transformation (used it before for converter control)
basically rotates the 3 ph reference frame to convert time varying signals to dc ones
synchs it to make it appear stationary
Use to model induction machines
Homework is to build it up using matlab/plecs

Built my model for a wind turbine induction generator connecting to grid
got it working with accurate results
then got an email from prof cancelling it
said too many people having issues
reassigned a simpler hw using hand calcs
told him I was done, said he would give me extra credit
I'd rather have my 8 hours back! Lol
don't mind the yellow highlighting, used it to check my work

Good job Iggy.

PS. I like Mathcad over Matlab. Just a preference, it was what I used in school.

Thanks
I used a slide rule, no kidding
matlab is what they gave us, student license, so it's what I use
cumbersome and limited in some ways but it can be worked around

it sure helps illustrate the concept being able to change parameters and see the result

did the 'new' homework
hand calcs of induction machine equivalent circuits, transient not only steady state
T, mech
rotor/stator currents
Power, elec, mech
losses, stator, rotor, iron
etc
interesting
imo I have a good working knowledge of machines
only a basic knowledge of theory, but better now

I am taking a summer course too. Its supposed to be a very practical course on controls using RS Logix.

Instead I am stuck doing Boolean Algebra.

( ̅A*B)+(A* ̅B)=Y is the Boolean equation for a three way light switch. Not sure I will need to use that in my daily life. I can write the truth table for it also :) Good times!!

you may not use the math per se but you will use the logical thought process it teaches you to solve problems

Just did the second one
a permanent magnet synchronous generator
building it gives you an idea of how it works and how different parameters are inter-related
this one includes the mechanical driving system
a wind tubine: pitch, blade radius, wind speed, air p, etc
includes grid interconnect load
max 5 MW 3300 v 925 A 0.95 pf leading (purely R grid for now)
next we'll build a convertor to get a synched 60 Hz

Time to pick cousres for fall semester
need 2 to finish
thinking

ECE 2646 LINEAR SYSTEM THEORY – Professor Mao
(13635)3 credits, Tuesday, 5:20-7:50 pm, G36 Benedum Hall
Linear spaces and operators, mathematical descriptions of linear systems, controllability and observability, irreducible realization of rational transfer-function matrices, canonical forms, state feedback and state estimators, stability.

ECE 2777 POWER SYSTEMS TRANSIENTS 1 – Dr. Paserba
(28759)3 credits, Monday, 6:00-8:30 pm, 411 IS Building
Lumped parameter analysis, switching transients in AC/DC systems, arc modeling, damping, current suppression, traveling wave phenomena, line discontinuities, ferroresonance, transient recovery voltage. Prerequisite: ECE 1769

might be a bit much to chew working full time not to mention family time

we'll see

not sure what 2646 IS, EVEN after reading it 3 times! lol

Got my grade
A+ :)
still only 4 gpa points though

fall term I decided on

I am currently off grid and have a small wind turbine. I have a very good wind site. I am going on grid soon and it wont really be worth buying a grid tie inverter for it, but I have always wanted to build an induction motor based grid tie machine. Pretty "easy", mostly mechanical. Probably would have a variable pitch mechanism to keep slip within proper parameters.

signed up for the fall (a fiasco, took 4 emails to get the release to enroll from my advisor)

1st class last night, 15 class 3 credit course, mondays 6:00-8:30
going to be tough but worth it
instructor is both academic and industry experienced

John Paserba

http://sites.ieee.org/pes-enews/2014/06/13/meet-the-candidates/

final on the 12th
tough course
5 quizzes
10 HW
4 pscad models
midterm
final

really learned alot, definitely worth it
fundemental understanding of transients (fault, lightening, switching)
determining magnitude, calculation and modelling
selecting insulation bil, sil, etc
mitigation, limiting
Arrestors

side bonus
1 3 cr semester grad engr course is worth 45 PE pdh
all 4 licenses satisfied in one fell swoop
