Is it necessary to have a dedicated circuit for a 110 vac sump pump located in the crawl space of a commercial building?

Re: Sump pump circuit

The NEC has very few places in which it requires a ?dedicated circuit.? A sump pump is not one of them. But I don?t think that is the question you had intended to ask. A better question is, ?If I were to install such a pump, would it be a good idea to have a dedicated circuit?? In general, I would think so. But individual circumstances vary from building to building. In any event, it is a design choice, not a code issue.

Are you getting advice from an electrician, and are you asking us to confirm or refute that advice?

Re: Sump pump circuit

I am an electrical contractor and have always made it a practice, where possible, to install a dedicated circuit for this type application. The question was posed to settle a discussion with a fellow electrician. We both agreed that it was not a code requirement, and he thought it foolish to do so if not required. Thanks for your reply.

I apologize for having suspected you of being otherwise. :( But in my defense, your profile describes you as an ?owner.? That term is often used by do-it-yourselfers. I infer that the thing of which you are an owner is a contracting company. If so, then good for you. :D

But let me now take issue with the statement made by your ?fellow electrician.? I strongly disagree with the notion that to do something that the code does not require is to be foolish. The code only addresses the minimum requirements for safety. The code explicitly states that it is not a design manual, and that compliance with the code will not ensure an ?efficient, convenient, or adequate? installation. Reference 90.1 (B) and (C). I believe that most of the time, we have to do more than the code minimums, in order to give the owner an acceptable and useful product.
