Sump pump feed in trough with water pipe?

Hey Gang-
My facility has a newly installed sump pump with a trough that the pipe runs in over to the drain opening. This trough is not expected to get wet, unless from a broken pipe or surface water (like heavy mopping or something like that). If it does get wet, the water will simply flow back into the pit.

The 110v electric line is also run in this trough. It is in ridgid conduit with a water tight bell box. The conduit is held off the ground with mini's so it shouldn't ever sit in water. The pump plugs into a GFCI receptical.

The question has come up if this is safe. One suggestion is to mount another box prior to entering the trough and mount the GFCI there. Therefore if the GFCI should trip, there would no longer be any power in the trough. Or I could swap the breaker for a GFCI breaker.

Another issue is the high water alarm. This is simply a float switch (sump pump teather type switch) that will turn on a red bulb should the water level rise. This float has a piggy back plug so it is run from an outlet (up a post about 12'). This is not on a GFCI outlet because it is too high to reach and reset.

Any suggestions?

I'm a big fan of GFCI breakers. A good example is a dock where there are GFCI breakers out over the water. Even with a tripped GFCI receptacle, kids still get killed playing in the water. GFCI breaker eliminates virtually all risk. And it's cheap.

That is similar to what these guys are worried about. Even if the gfci receptical trips, there will still be live power in the trench. I think I will go ahead and install a gfi breaker. Done. No worries.
