i always though sump pumps that are under water that the wiring were suppose to be hermeticly sealed. last week the maintenance dept. removed a pump to replaced the cord and the terminal box had only a gasket to seal the wiring. is this a common wiring setup?

They're sealed, and normally also oil filled. When this seal fails, the sump pump starts to trip the GFCI and ultimately fails altogether.

they are 3 phase 480volt . would they need gfci protection.
