I have an inspector that makes us support a fixture whip 6' or shorter at the j-box. I reffered to Art. 330-B-2 , 348.30 A Exc. # 3 and 410.67 C. He says that his interpretation is that the whip needs support. I think he is wrong. It wouldn't really matter for a few fixtures, but there are hundreds on this job. I really don't think we should have to go back and support them. Any comments?

Re: support for a 6 ft fixture whip.

Well, you have stated the respective code that specifically permits no support required. Have you discussed these specific sections to the inspector?

Is the inspector the AHJ or does he have a boss? I would ask for a formal interpretation stating why the support is required from your building department that issued the permit for work. :)

330-30 B2 " not more than 6ft from the last point of support for connections". That tells me where there are connections it must be supported. 330-30 C. ;)

I agree with this graphic,

this is the same wording as 330.30(B) so IMO the inspectors interpretation is wrong.

No it does not have to be, no support is required for this 6' whip to a fixture.
