A while back I asked about supporting water lines from cable tray and received some good response. My next question is, can you use the same threaded rod to support piping as well as the cable tray or conduit? I am saying use seperate supports. I meeting a lot of opposition and the work continues.

What type of pipes are they wanting to support off of these rods?

One is a 3/4" copper potable water line and the other is a 1" PVC line. Weight is definately not an issue here.

Did run into this once and was told we can't share supports.Might be a building code or even a plumbing code.Don't forget its more than just the pipe,water has weight too.

OK, since these are not steam, chilled or hot water lines, and if the rod is sufficient, I personally don't think there is a problem.

Jim notice he said weight is not a problem.

A 12.5% fill of copper wire would weigh more than the same pipe 100% filled with water.

I don't think the NEC prohibits hanging other systems from the same support. I think their intent is that a conduit (or cable tray) is made to support its own weight and the weight of the cable or wire inside it. So the code prohibits hanging other items from conduits and cable trays. However, the weight of the water lines you are talking about are not adding stress to the cable tray or conduit, its just adding more stress to the threaded rod and anchor. So as long as the rod and anchor are sized large enough, it should be OK code wise.

However, I personally would not want the water pipes clamped tight. Fast closing valves could cause water hammer. This would make the pipes kick, and I wouldn't want a electrical system subjected to that.
