Supporting 4SQ Boxes

Over the past 6 months, I have begun doing electrical inspections for my company's projects. I'm shocked at how many people have a 4SQ box floating in the air (in an unfinished area) supported by nothing more than the EMT conduit. Am I missing a code exception somewhere??? As I read 314.23, it's wrong.

Welcome to the forum.:)

You are not missing anything. 4 square boxes are never permitted to be supported only by the raceways entering the box.

Might have missed the change(and I'm not being sarcastic, maybe the code changed), but I could swear the code allowed boxes to be considered supported if there were conduits on opposite sides(one on each opposite side, or 2 and one, don't remember exactly).
Again, might be recalling an old code that might have been changed.

You know, I remember something like that from years ago. Maybe that used to be okay.

Take a look at 314.23(E)&(F) for the type of boxes permitted to be supported by a raceway.

It was never permitted and always a violation. See 314.23

What you may be thinking of is 314.23(E). This allows the box to be supported by the raceway IF the conduits ar threaded and IF the box has threaded hubs.
A 4" square box with conduits with locknuts and bushings or EMT are required to be supported.
