Supporting EMT to existing EMT conduits

Just went through this recently... EMT has not been identified as a means of support and, from 2014 NEC:
300.11(B) Raceways Used as Means of Support. Raceways shall be used only as a means of support for other raceways, cables, or nonelectrical equipment under any of the following conditions:

(1) Where the raceway or means of support is identified as a means of support.

(2) Where the raceway contains power supply conductors for electrically controlled equipment and is used to support Class 2 circuit conductors or cables that are solely for the purpose of connection to the equipment control circuits

(3) Where the raceway is used to support boxes or conduit bodies in accordance with 314.23 or to support luminaires in accordance with 410.36(E).

Is the EMT "being a raceway" when it's empty and only being used as a means of support? I have used pieces of EMT to bridge bar joists and rested other raceway on top or connected them below. How would this be different than using a piece of unistrut? Of course, EMT is not as sturdy as unistrut, but I'm talking about instances where only one or two lightweight raceways are being supported.

Furthermore, what if I used a piece of rigid conduit as a support. Would it matter if I picked up the rigid conduit in the electrical department of Home Depot or the plumbing department? I'm pretty sure rigid from the plumbing section is not a raceway, but the two pipes are identically in every other way AFAIK.

I've seen racks built where the end posts were rigid conduit pounded into the ground and unistrut cross members were added to support equipment.

Using EMT, IMC, or RMC as support is fine when as you say, it is not being used for conductors, this can also be found in Erico and T&B product information.
