I want to run a vertical RMC conduit from an enclosure to a cable tray about 10' above the top of the enclosure. NEC 344.30(A) states that you must "securely fasten" within 3' of the conduit termination. NEC 344.30(B)(3) states that you may "support" vertical risers at spcaing up to 16' for 2" conduit if no other means of support is readily available. Are securely fasten and support synonymous in this case, allowing the 3' rule to be bypassed?

Re: Supporting RMC per NEC 2002

Table 344.30(B)(2) only applies to straight horizontal runs. 344.30(B)(3) applies to vertical runs and states the you can support the raceway at the top and bottom at intervals not exceeding 20'.

I beleive this section does negate the requirement of a fastener within 3' of the termination to the equipment.

For the 2005, this section has added the words, supported and secured at the tops and bottoms. This change indicates the conduit should be secured to equipment it is connected to and not just supported by it.
