See Article 386.2 of the 2002 NEC. I don't consider you installation as qualifying as a Surface Metal Raceway. SMW are manufactured raceways with associated fittings that distinguishes itself from other raceways. Metallic Wiremold would be an example. Your installation would more properly fit under the requirements of Article 314.
