Hello...

Opened a panel and found this Approved lightning arrester attached to the mains.

On all the panels I've changed or installed I've never installed one.

I've seen them "on" panels and attached to a two pole breaker.

I research this particular unit and could not find any info on it.

Should I leave it right where it is and how it is?

Should I remove it and have no "surge" protection?

Should I remove it and speak to owner about installing a new one?

(this panel is flush mounted in a finished basement, if the suggestion is to install a new one has anyone ever installed it protruding from a finished wall?? )

Thank you

Unless there is some good reason to mess with it, I would not even mention anything to the HO. It opens up so many cans of worms it is not worth bringing up IMO.

If you wanted to actually "fix" it, you would install a type 1 SPD according to the instructions supplied with the device.

You do realize that the device you linked to is exactly the device that's already installed, don't you? :?

That's funny.

I mentioned I was going to look into it to her. I haven't talked to him. Thanks for posting that link. Maybe I can get some info on it. I would like to leave it alone. Fi those things short. Burn out. Or blow up? As you mentioned I was thinking about keeping my trap shut. But didn't.

I would like to cut it out and be done with it but with my luck I would remove it there was a strike and something fried and they came after me. Do these things work. Do they take a hit and need to be replaced. Or do they just hang out forever and forever. ??

yes. the OP seemed to be unfamiliar with the device so I linked to it.

it does not appear to be a type 1 SPD.

OK.. type 1?? great...more research :- )

I originally found this link the other day http://www.approvedlightning.com/ they are a design company and did not make this surge suppresser.

googled for applied in elmont ny to no avail.

The ebay picture looks like it has been around in someones basement since the 60's or 70's.

I don't think they around any more.

Maybe I should have kept my mouth shut to the owner.. but the "smaller wires" and a "device" on the LINE SIDE of the main has me concerned.

Still....., to walk away... cut it out... or reinstall that one or anew...

as mentioned, I've never installed one but have seen a couple mounted on the sides of panels attached to a 30a two pole..

do these things work?.. how do they protect from a "LIGHTNING" strike with this..

gotta research.... it's all good :- )

In my last home, as part of a service upgrade, I had a CHSA or CHQSA (can't remember the panel that was installed) whole house surge suppressor installed on a couple of spare breaker positions. Is there enough room in your panel to do this? I'm not a big fan of dongles that float around inside a load center.
