Is a type 3 surge protector for pole lights any more effective if placed in the fixture as opposed to installing it at the pole base?

any thoughts?

I'd guess any differences are pretty negligible.

Direct lightning strike could be a major difference, but something likely comes out damaged regardless.

I know not answering your question, but Type 3 SPDs are not listed for use at a pole light.

Type 3 SPDs are listed for use within 30 feet from the electrical service panel unless they are evaluated at Type 2 SPDs (that is, they receive a Nominal Discharge Current Rating of 3 kA minimum). Typically, these are cord-connected surge strips, direct plug-in SPDs, or receptacle-type SPDs installed at the utilization equipment being protected (i.e. computers, copy machines, etc.).

Thanks Ron. I’m specifically using this model: https://www.satco.com/80-929.html

i said type 3 by mistake because the unit is labeled as a class 3. Not exactly sure what a class 3 is.

If if anyone has a better suggestion for protection of parking lot pole led lights please let me know. Thanks.

Is the Satco UL listed (or NRTL listed)?
Seems like your greatest hazard would be lightning protection, that little SPD would be toast in a direct lightning strike....
You might consider making sure the pole base bolts are tied to the rebar cage. Some would suggest a ground rod, but the rebar will be better than a ground rod for lightning.

My concern is not with lighting but surges originating from the POCO or from within our facilities. Im looking for the best/cost effective surge protector if anyone may have any suggestions on products they prefer that I may use in the pole base.

Something at the branch circuit, feeder, or even at the service may do well enough especially for utility surges.

The LED drivers probably have some basic surge protection on their "front end" even if they don't mention anything.
