Is it compulsorily for a SPD to be located closest to the main breaker of a panel as possible ie breaker space 1, 3, 5 or 2, 4, 6? I know it goes by manufacturers instructions but I would assume that is part of any instruction. Thoughts?

They aren't in any of my panels.

For all intents, for non injected source installations (i.e. PV), there is no electrical difference between the ends of a panelboard bus assembly. Both ends will respond simultaneously to a voltage rise which the SPD protects against.

Definitely follow manufacturers instructions for optimum protection.
