Hi,
I just found a new (to me) section in the NEC, article 285- Surge Protective Devices. I've never used them before and can't see that the NEC requires them anywhere, but wondering where/when you all use them. I have a standard 480/277V 3000A service I have in mind. I can't remember seeing SPDs on any building service I've seen.

This also relates to NFPA 780, which appears to required SPDs everywhere "at all power service entrances"- section 4.18.2.1. Thanks for the input.

I don't think NFPA 780 is enforced anywhere. It is a standard for lightning protection if you decide you need it.

It makes sense that it would require SPD in that context.

Sure you've seen them. Very common at service entrances. Also known as TVSS. Available as Type 1,2 or 3 depending on installation point. I'm seeing almost all larger services spec'd by EE's to include TVSS as part of the gear. Many have them on residential services.
NFPA 780 is for lightning protection but you don't need a lightning protection system to use SPD.
