Have installed a new packaged ac unit on the end of my house . I have a power pole with main panel that feeds 30' to a sub-panel . This sub-panel feeds 30 ' to the panel inside my house . The sub-panel also has a 60 amp 240v feed roughly 35' to the disconnect outside for my packaged ac unit . I have a Sq D surge protector on my main panel . I want to go ahead and add a surge protector at the ac unit . Any recommendations ??

Why do you think you need a SPD?

Granted, you are free to add a surge protection device if you want one whether you need it or not.

I would be looking at the voltage the existing unit clamps at and get something that clamps at a lower voltage to put closer to the air conditioner. If I were inclined to do anything at all.

Being here in central Fl we have a lot of lighting . I was under the understanding that a surge protector is good to have here at the ac unit .
Might be right. But putting in a second one that clamps at the same voltage as the existing one probably does not add much in the way of protection.

Most effective protection is, at the meter followed by top of the buss in the load center.

I had about 50 locations with services from 600 amps to 60. All had SPDs, one at service and one on lighting panels. Once SPDS were installed, power supply failures in the instrumentation stopped.
