Surge Protector

I installed a surge protector made by square d a HEPD80 for a residential 200 amp service . I also have a sub panel about 30' away from the main 200 amp panel. My question is would it be reasonable to add another HEPD80 in this panel for added protection ?

Yep, 'specially if you have Schneider stock :lol:

Otherwise, just buy a handful of 70 cent 20 mm MOVs from Mouser or other distributor. Better protection as there is minimal lead length and inductance.

Just wondering about the opinion of code experts: Have had inspectors question installing MOVs (the round red parts) directly from breaker output (mov lead crimped into barrel with conductor or into pigtail with wire nut) but not rejected.
Never have figured how to interpret NEC on that issue. Applicable section?

Will it work? Probably, at least for a while.

Did you pick the right MOVs? Maybe. Thermal protection, anyone?

Are these components UL listed? Probably not.

What will the insurance company say if there is an electrical fire and your MOVs are found in the panel? Is this a position you or your customers want to be in?

MOVs are not listed. They are recognized. The code requires SPD to be listed. They are also required to have a SCCR, which a MOV does not have.
