I lent a single axis miligauss meter to a customer this week so he could search his 15 acres for magnetic fields. We both agreed my time can be better spent fixing obvious problems vs searching.
During the set up and demonstration I purposely chose the area above and around an underground feeder that has a temporary EG laid on top of the earth. (Permanent fix goes in next week) I was expecting to get some reading from the buried cable, I was not prepared for the reading on the EG. The EG had no current flow when we left it on our last visit. A hand held grinder was being used 200 feet away and caused the EG to carry .2 amps.
We were able to find the buried cables quite well. Surprised by the performance of a low end device that I have very little field experience with.
