Swimming Pool motor breaker code

I’m seeking clarification on 2017 NEC codes concerning type of breakers used to supply power to below ground swimming pools.

Previously I understood the code to require GFI protection to a pool motor only when powered by a receptacle. The application in question is direct wired to a sub panel with the motor being over 20’ from the pool .

I am unclear as to the use of the term “receptacle “. I have interpreted that as a pool motor that has a plug that is exposed and connects to a receptacle for line voltage . Not a direct wired application in appropriate conduit from motor to panel.

Can anyone shed light on the code concerning this question?

Thanks

Gfci protection has been required for pools whether they are direct wired or not for many code cycles now. So Yes you need Gfci for pool motors.

BTW, welcome to the forum

Here is the section

680.21 (C) GFCI Protection. Outlets supplying pool pump motorsconnected to single-phase, 120-volt through 240-volt branch
circuits, whether by receptacle or by direct connection, shall be
provided with ground-fault circuit-interrupter protection for
personnel.

Don't be confused by the term outlet-- an outlet is not just a receptacle. Look at the definition of outlet in the NEC

Outlet. A point on the wiring system at which current is taken
to supply utilization equipment.

Thank you

Thank you

Thanks for your time and clarification . I read the same and thought that was the case but different inspectors in my area have not been consistent on that code. I’ll be sure to follow NEC code to be on the side of caution regardless of lack of code knowledge / enforcement by the inspectors.

I thought I recalled the previous code (pre-2017) to state “receptacle” and not “outlet “ but I could be mistaken. Regardless , good info and reassurance . Thanks again !!
