I went on a service call and the swimming pool pump was not working. It has a 12-2 circuit to a time clock to the pump. my question is , the 12 circuit is the older type wiring with the smaller ground wire, do I need to replace that circuit or can it still be used and just install a new time clock?

thanks for your help!!!!!

What type wire is it? You said 12-2 but is it regular NM or UF wire?

Also the circuit needs an insulated grounding conductor. Yours sounds like a bare EGC.

I assume this is a one family dwelling

(4) One-Family Dwellings. In the interior of dwelling
units, or in the interior of accessory buildings associated
with a dwelling unit, any of the wiring methods recognized
in Chapter 3 of this Code that comply with the provisions
of this section shall be permitted. Where run in a cable
assembly, the equipment grounding conductor shall be permitted
to be uninsulated, but it shall be enclosed within the
outer sheath of the cable assembly

The EGC has to be insulated. If old 12/2 is romex/Uf it's a code violation and has to be changed.

If this is a single family dwelling, which I believe it is, then the wiring in the house can be nm cable right to the timer assuming it is mounted on the house. Without more info we just don't know.

The code section I posted earlier says
the equipment grounding conductor shall be permitted
to be uninsulated, but it shall be enclosed within the
outer sheath of the cable assembly
