Would you put the first switch next to the door controlling the outside lts. or the first switch controlling inside lts any thoughts

Re: Switch locations

The inside light switch first. It gets used more than the outside light switch.

Re: Switch locations

i agree. of course the guy that wired my house did not. virtually every 2 or 3 gang lightswitch setup was counterintuitive.

i switched a few myself cause it was annoying, but a few are still they way they were when I moved in in 1986.

i have a 2 gang switch in the kitchen where the side next to the doorway is the spots and the inside switch is the overhead lights on the fan. I still turn the wrong one on sometimes cause you just expect the main light to be the closest one.

Re: Switch locations

If possible I ask the owner first. Seems like whichever way I do it they want it different.

Re: Switch locations

We have gone on all to many 1 year warranty last calls for switch in wrong location ? Only to find That it is a bathroom that has the fart fan first and the light switch second as you look at them from ths doorway.I tell our guys wire the way the print shows and place switches as per print. Then we can bill the builders warranty dept. for these silly calls if switches are as per print :D

Re: Switch locations

At our company we go by the print even if its stupid looking or poor choice on anything. If it needs changed and we did per print then we can charge.Otherwise we do it free.On houses i always used common since.First bedroom switch from door would be lights then fan,if more than 1 switch for lights best follow print.Bathroom 1st switch vanity light 2nd shower can 3rd fart fan.On rough i notch romex with klines 1 for position 1 etc. That way even if jacket gets removed mark still on wire.As to getting callbacks at end of warranty ,this should have all been caught on punchout list, far too costly to send a man to fix after owner is moved in.

Re: Switch locations

Ahhh a pet peeve of mine.
I like the switch to be the closes toward the fixture it controls. or toward the door you have to go through to get to the controlled light I.E. the outside light. I.E. a hall way that has a two gain located in the hall by the door going into the garage one three-way for the hall and one for the garage. the one for the garage should be toward the door and the one for the hall should be toward the hall light. Baths are simple most used light first secondary light next any more in order of use then any motorized equipment. Paddle fans always last. This goes along with my other pet peeve. Three-ways and four-ways. When all switch's in the circuit are down the light's are to be off. :D
