I heard something about a neutral was required to be run instead of switch loops,
i have a 120volt machine that I'm putting together with a couple remote thermostats.Is it ok to just run a switch loop on them or do they need a neutral as well.

The neutral requirement for wall switch boxes has to do with providing a power connection for dimmers or occupancy sensors. No need to worry about that for thermostats, I presume. But if you might want to install "smart" thermostats which require line power some day, then maybe you should provide for it. :)
