What is the maximum mounting height of a heavy duty safety switch, o any switch, as required by the NEC?

6'7" to the center point of the switch if I understand your question.

i thoguht it would be measured from the floor to the top of the handle. could you tell me where in the code i can find this?

2008 NEC 404.8 6ft 7in to the center of the grip in the ON position.

They shall be installed such that the center of the grip of the operating handle of the switch or circuit breaker, when in its highest position, is not more than 2.0 m (6 ft 7 in.) above the floor or working platform.
