This question would probably be very dependent on manufacturer, but how many distribution sections can a switchboard potentially have (is it as many as specified or is there a limit) and how many spaces per section typically?

1. No limit.
2. Switchboards don't really have spaces like a panelboard has. Switchboards have inches of breaker mounting space and the different size breakers take up different amounts of space. If you look through the switchboard catalogs you can get the information you need, but the easier way is to just send your one-line or switchboard requirements to the manufacturer's rep of your choice and let that person lay it out and give you a size and weight for your equipment.

to add, available space depends on what each section is doing and it depends on MFR. Agree with @d0nut that your best course of action is to draw up a one-line and let them lay it out-then ask questions.
