I have heard of automatic transfer switches being integrated within a section of a switchboard. Has anyone effectively seen this done? If so what did the switchboard section breakdown look like (UGPS, ATS, Main, Distribution or UGPS, Main, ATS, Distribution or etc.) Addtionally, what NEC sections come into play when doing something like this?

We often use a free standing ATS butted up against the SWBD, such as utility main, then the ATS (generator feeder terminates in the alternate source input of the ATS), the distribution. The interconnection of the utility main and the primary input of the ATS is wired through nipples connecting the enclosures, then the load of the ATS is wired to the distribution section (nippled enclosures).
