We have a switchboard that will be side feed conduit from the side opposed to being feed from bottom. The switchboard will sit back against the wall and left side against the wall also. Can I remove the side covers so the conduits can just penetrate thru the side or is it required to have the side covers on? I figure since if the bottom is allowed to be open the side is not much different.

IMO, no. Exception No. 2 to 300.12 only applies to open bottom equipment. You can argue there is no difference, but the code is clear.

Exception No. 2: Raceways and cables installed into the bottom of open
bottom equipment, such as switchboards, motor control centers, and
floor or pad-mounted transformers, shall not be required to be mechanically
secured to the equipment.

You are correct. It doesnt hurt to ask. I always get different opinions and suggestions on a particular situation. I was hoping for an idea on how to approach. I really appreciate the help.
