:-? when installing a switched receptacle, does it matter which side is the switched side. does it say anything about this anywhere in the NEC ?

The NEC is silent on the issue.

Personally, I prefer the switched to be on the bottom, so the lamp can stay plugged in all the time, and the vacuum is easier to plug into the top.

You're not going for a ground up or down thing are ya? If so it would be the opposite of whatever way you do it now.... As for top or bottom - I usually go for the top... But have it either way. The answer to your question is no....

How does top or bottom relate to which side?

Welcome to the forum! Now just in case you were wondering if it matters which side of the line is switched; you do not want to switch the neutral side of the line.;)

I almost mentioned that last night, but I believed he meant top or bottom.

By the way, why is my picture your avatar? :D

Why not? :)

The NEC does not prohibit switching the grounded conductor.

Doesn't it require that if you open the neutral you also have to open the ungrounded conductor?
Or Am I missing something?
