If a receptacle is switched, can this count as one of the required receptacle? Section 210.52(3) says that the switched receptacle is in addition to required receptacles. Is there something that says if the tab is removed from the receptacle so that half is switched and the other half is not that it counts?

The rules that require receptacle outlets are worded in terms such as, "no point along a wall is farther than 6" from a receptacle outlet." By definition, a standard duplex receptacle is actually two receptacle outlets. So if one is switched and the other is not, the one that is not switched can be counted as one of the required outlets.

1/2-switched meets the "required" receptacle layout.

As stated it does not count but this is a relatively new requirement. I believe that George one of our moderators wrote this change.

The requirement is 6" spacing. I know that has to be the truth, because I saw it on the Internet. :happyyes: The Internet doesn't lie! :happyno:

To be clear, what was stated in earlier posts was that the switched half does not count as one of the required receptacles, but the unswitched half does count. Are you in agreement with that?

I think he does or he should. In years past they switched the entire outlet and that would not be compliant today. I think we all agree on this one

Yes I agree, I was being brief by responding to (in my head) the title of the thread. :)
