Re: switches

By Ryan: 408.9 Notice also that, unlike receptacles, this section does not address intimate contact between the yoke and the box [250.146].
But 404.9(B) does consider a switch mounted in a metal box as grounded.

B) Grounding. Snap switches, including dimmer and similar control switches, shall be effectively grounded and shall provide a means to ground metal faceplates, whether or not a metal faceplate is installed. Snap switches shall be considered effectively grounded if either of the following conditions is met.

(1) The switch is mounted with metal screws to a metal box or to a nonmetallic box with integral means for grounding devices.
By the way where did the 408 come from? Typo?

Re: switches

I wont use those things anyway. Are they supposed to provide a reliable connection?

Edit: Isn't integral grounding means the metal gadget with a ground screw for the EGC that the 6-32 device screw goes into before it gets to the plastic box?

Re: switches

Me too.

It sucks climbing all the way on my high horse and making some grand statement that has nothing whatsoever to do with what the post actully says. :D

How can I educate you about my uneducated guess?

That was just a stab in the dark, really. I envisioned a conductor stabbed into it, and a mounting screw making contact with it. :)

I was just guessing as to what weird contrivance could fulfill that code. ;)

Sam
Some how I read this:
By mdshunk: Perhaps you mean the self grounding switches with the special thing-a-ma-bob in the one yoke hole? I have some concern that the yoke might not be tight against the metal box in all cases with a flush installation if these aren't self grounding or have a ground terminal.
And got corn fused with thinking you was talking about the same thing in your post just before my last post, and Oh well!

But as far as Mdshunk goes he is talking about a requirment only for receptacles. There I got it out! :D
