Johnnyp is correct... note that foreign systems cannot be installed over the footprint of the gear within 6 feet of the top. They can be installed over the footprint above 6 feet from the top. I've seen inspectors follow through with the requirement for protection apparatus (usually in the form of some sort of hood) to protect the gear against condensation dripping, etc. as noted in (b) Foreign Systems.
You mentioned "directly above". If it is within 6 feet of the top of the gear and directly over it, it cannot be installed there. If it is above the 6 foot area above the gear the inspector could legitemately request a protective to be installed. If the head, or the branch piping to it is not directly over the gear at any point, a protective should not be required.

I SAID THE SAME THING. BUT EVERYBODY TOLD ME I WAS WRONG I SHOWED THE ARTICLE TO THEM AND THEY STILL DISAGREE AND TOLD ME IT HAS TO BE THERE I THRU MY HANDS UP AND SAID I LET THE INSPECTOR TELL THEM THEY ARE WRONG. BUT NOW I WILL NEED TO TAKE THE COVERS OFF SO THEY CAN GET TO IT .

This happened on a job I inspected recently. The sprinkler and plumbing pipes are about 30 inches above the 2000 amp 480/277volt switchgear. Redtagged it and the project manager sure is not too happy. He wants to have a meeting with me; I said sure when I can see the corrections
