Johnnyp is correct... note that foreign systems cannot be installed over the footprint of the gear within 6 feet of the top. They can be installed over the footprint above 6 feet from the top. I've seen inspectors follow through with the requirement for protection apparatus (usually in the form of some sort of hood) to protect the gear against condensation dripping, etc. as noted in (b) Foreign Systems.
You mentioned "directly above". If it is within 6 feet of the top of the gear and directly over it, it cannot be installed there. If it is above the 6 foot area above the gear the inspector could legitemately request a protective to be installed. If the head, or the branch piping to it is not directly over the gear at any point, a protective should not be required.
